    I appreciate your response.
    The reason for my post is that there are many opinions on this question.

    I am, myself, using: /%category%/%postname%/%post_id%

    As many of us have bought SLP because we are convinced not only of Denis' integration skills but also his understanding of what really works for SEO I was trying to draw out from him his personal opinion.

    Regards

    Bravos,

    I believe I have seen Denis elsewhere say he likes what Paul does, which is a stock permalink format. I have used a similar style as you where dates are not relevant, but am building a corporate site now for one of my companies and am calling the blog thread as /news and am using the stock date based version that Paul mentions and calling them news bits and releases rather than blog posts.

    I have never seen any data that supports one style better than another as far as SEO is concerned, but then again I never really looked for the data if it exists.

    Denis has repeatedly mentioned there are problems with /catagory/postname/ and has suggested that using some type of numerical order is important.
    I think Denis's favorites are the date form above (which is the default for SP) and /postnumber/postname/.
    I am sure it is in the forum somewhere. I did a search for it a few weeks ago and found it.

    Agreed on previous reports from Denis, and I believe the problem is with duplicate URL possibilities with posts having the same name in the same categories, and so the insertion of the post ID eliminates that problem.

    Personally, I always recommend the date and named base structure, which is good for SEO as well as usability.

    Avoid these two structure at all costs:

    * /%postname%/
    * /%category%/%postname%/

    By using them, you'll get performance problems (several queries could be needed to identify what you're trying to display), bugs (how do you tell /page/subpage from /category/post?), and more bugs (how does WP know that /post/feed is in fact the feed for /post?).

    I can understand his opinion based on the structure he quotes of /%category%/%postname%/ however...

    /%category%/%postname%/%post_id% has the additional parameter.

    I picked up this structure from PortalFeeder - who are quite enthusiastic about SLP, with the explanation that with your keywords in your category and your post name(Title) and then in the first sentence of the post etc this was a good path for SEO with the postid preventing duplication.

    I would appreciate Denis' comment on this.

    PS I hasten to add that as a non techie I am just in search of a practical recommendation from someone who knows. I am not trying to start a technical discussion on the whys and wherefores.

    Bruce, I do the very same thing, except I place the post id in between the other 2 rather than at the end.

    Would you not break the keyword path that way?

    I don't understand the fascination with having your category in a permalink structure, especially when cat's are duplicate content concerns. Your article doesn't have a chance to be picked up by google news unless it has at least 6 numbers (just a rumor) in it.

    I do like /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/%post_id%/

    Let's assume my version has value in creating a keyword path and your rumour is right that it needs the date included to be picked up by date related services like Google News.
    How about:

    /%category%/%postname%/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%post_id%

    - post_id then allows you to have 2 or more posts on the same day with all the same details - should such a situation ever occur.

    Or are there any limits on the length of the permalinks?

    Would still like Denis' view on this whenever he untangles himself from his current workload.
